Former Rochdale midfielder Joe Thompson, who started his career at Manchester United, has died at the age of 36.

Thompson was diagnosed with cancer for the third time in April 2024. He was found to have stage four lymphona, a type of blood cancer, which had spread to his lungs. In 2019, he'd been forced to retire due to the physical toll of playing professional spot alongside his treatment.

THE BIGGER PICTURE
The Bath-born midfielder joined United's academy at the age of nine, before joining Rochdale in 2005. He made his professional debut with Dale the following year. After leaving the club in 2012, he returned in 2016 making 203 appearances and scoring 19 goals. During his break from Spotland Stadium, he represented Tranmere, Wrexham, Southport and Carlisle.

WHAT HAS BEEN SAID
On social media, United said: "A man who epitomised our club's values. We are saddened to share that Joe Thompson has passed away. A warm personality who had a deep connection with our club from a young age, our thoughts are with Joe's family and friends at this difficult time." They also posted a full obituary.
Rochdale's social media message read: "We're devastated to learn of the passing of Dale legend, Joe Thompson. Our thoughts are with Joe’s family and friends at this incredibly sad time. One of our own."

DID YOU KNOW?
Thompson continued to push forward in raising money for charity, in spite of his illness. In October 2024, he organised a 21-mile fundraising walk from Old Trafford to Rochdale's Spotland Stadium.
